Business Mentorship

UpEffect is happy to offer youth in Gaza mentorship in starting a business, fundraising, marketing, CV-building and connecting to people within their network.

UpEffect is a crowdfunding and support platform advancing opportunities for responsible leaders of the new economy. We empower and equip founders and brands with tools and recipes to address today's most pressing problems including social and economic injustice, climate change, global poverty, illiteracy and more. We do this through three mediums: rewards-based crowdfunding, crowdfunding coaching, and strategic consulting. Each of these offerings aims to help companies grow revenue, build a community, create living wage jobs across their supply chains, and operate as a responsible actor in the economy.

Virtual Creative Writing workshops

Facilitator: Sofia Nakou

Sofia Nakou holds a BA(hons) in Drama from Kingston University and an MSc in Theatre and Performance studies from Edinburgh University. With over 10 years of experience as a drama facilitator and theatre director Sofia has worked with some of the leading art organisations in Scotland such as the Lyceum theatre, Tron theatre, Borders Youth Theatre, Edinburgh Youth Theatre, Impact Arts etc. Currently, Sofia is an interdisciplinary PhD student working on her thesis, (Re)Constructing Asylum Narratives through the lens of Applied Theatre; a research project on how the asylum seekers’ narratives, and subsequently mental health, are affected by the asylum system process and how Applied Theatre can be part of an interdisciplinary approach to such complicated and ongoing issue.

Workshop summary

The goal of the workshops will be to use the time and space to write and be creative as a group. Sessions will include sharing of online art (that can be spoken word poetry, a performed monologue, a short story, animation etc), reflections and conversations with the young people. Based on the stimulus and discussions of each workshop we will build the themes and genres of writing we will be approaching. Each workshop will include warm up exercises/games, discussions over the theme/stimulus of the day, quite time (accompanied by our favourite music) where everybody will have the chance to concentrate and write and will be followed by sharing, feedback and reflections.
